Find out how washable carpets actually resist stains, dirt and pet accidents. Plus, find out where you can purchase one for your home.
When it comes to bulk purchases, carpet is one of the biggest options. We beastly test washable carpets. Read on to find out what we thought after trying out a washable carpet in our home.
Yes! Perhaps more surprisingly, it does fit in a standard washing machine. I tested two sizes: 5'x7' and 3'x5', and they both fit (individually) easily into my top-loading washer. However, just like any other stainable material, it is important to treat stains as soon as they appear. Carpets are washable, yes, but they are not immune to permanent stains.
I was hesitant about how easily the 6'x 9' rug would fit in my standard washing machine, but it folds up smaller than you might think.
Another thing we noticed was that over time, after multiple washes, the rug would flip up along the border instead of laying completely flat on the mat. There is no real solution to this other than to adjust and reattach the print layer until it is flat again.
Yes. Carpet pads like Velcro have a rubber backing that holds the whole thing in place. Seriously, these carpets don't move.
Relatively. For larger sizes, we recommend getting help. However, setting up the runner is manageable for one person.
Very well. During my testing, my dogs needed their nails trimmed badly and the carpet never got hooked. One of my dogs even peed on the carpet, but after immediately throwing it in the washing machine, there was no lingering smell or trace. Another editor with two cats and a dog also successfully removed unpleasant stains (ahem, vomit). So, yes, pet owners will be happy with washable carpets.
"Being able to throw your carpet in the washer when you need it is worth every penny. Trust me."

Yes and no. As far as rugs go, Ruggable is comparable in price to Target and World Market, but promises washable features not found in other brands. However, Ruggable rugs are not made of natural materials, which makes it difficult to justify the high price point. You can purchase a tufted wool rug for the same or cheaper price as a Ruggable rug, depending on what you're buying. If you want a flat printed rug that won't absorb stains, Ruggable is a good choice. If you want something thicker and more textured, go for a natural fiber rug.
We know that texture is important in carpeting! Most of our rugs are very flat and thin, have a soft chenille feel, and are made of polyester. If you're looking for a plush, padded option, you may want to try a plush or coarse pile style rug. Compared to my other non-washable coarse pile rugs, this one feels equally plush, soft and fluffy. It feels great under your feet when you wake up in the morning.
As a proud dog owner, I've always been curious about stylish but still washable rugs, but when my mid-century modern-loving eyes saw the coarse pile rug, I knew I had to give it a try! I can attest to the fact that the coarse pile style is also easy to clean in the machine, and while the white sometimes shows the dirt that her dog Miles tracks, everything washes off easily. Also, coarse pile carpets are available in gray.
Carpet Care Tip: After the first wash, the texture of the carpet may change a bit and some fibers may become tangled. We recommend spraying a mixture of fabric softener and water on the carpet and then combing it through with a brush. This technique really helps to "untangle" the carpet - kind of like using conditioner!
In addition to thinner indoor/outdoor classic mats, the brand now offers a cushioned option for indoor use. For kitchen mats where you can stand to wash dishes, or childcare where you want to land your kids on a soft spot, choose a padded mat at checkout. Thinner classic mats are best for doorways, under rolling furniture and outdoor spaces.
Place these rugs in entrances, hallways, children's rooms and outside. Don't place it under heavy furniture that must be moved every time the rug needs to be handled (e.g., dining rooms). Open, high-traffic areas work best.
I'm very hesitant to ask for durability, but they do stand up to daily wear and tear.
Because outdoor rugs and doormats are virtually indestructible, we also like to use these washable rugs outdoors. Both styles are perfect for these elements. Outdoor carpet feels softer than indoor carpet and has a very smooth texture. It has withstood sweeping, heavy rain, pressure washing and having two dogs run over it every day. I love that it provides a great place for my kids to sit and play, and that it is very easy to clean. Usually, outdoor rugs only last a season or two, but this one is high quality and durable. The stylish pattern and tight weave make it both functional and beautiful, making it ideal for outdoor spaces.
